Understanding Cherry Garden Branch Maps

What are Cherry Garden Branch Maps?

Cherry Garden Branch Maps are a unique assessment and learning tool designed especially for children with complex learning needs.

They help us understand clearly:

  • What your child can already do
  • What their next small steps are
  • How we can best support them to grow, learn and achieve in their own individual way

Every child has their own pathway to success.  Where roots grow. Potential blossoms. Futures flourish.

How do they work?

The maps are built around six key principles:

Development Focused

They cover the essential areas of development: Communication, Personal & Social, Physical, Cognitive and Sensory.

Small Steps

Learning is broken into small, manageable steps that build over time. Every achievement is celebrated.

Visual and Clear

Colourful, visual maps make progress easy to see and understand for staff, children and families.

Child Centred

We focus on your child’s strengths, interests and motivations to create meaningful learning experiences.

Tracking Progress

Branch Maps help us track progress over time and identify the exact next steps that will help your child flourish.

Shared Approach

We work closely with you and your child - sharing celebrations and planning the future together.

What does a Branch Map look like?

Each map is organised like a tree:

  • “I am learning to…” - current focus skills
  • “Next steps for me…” - the immediate next achievements
  • “I did it!” - completed steps that have blossomed

Every leaf represents a small step of learning. When a step is achieved, it blossoms. The trunk and roots represent your child’s strengths and the support that helps them grow.

Why do we use Cherry Garden Branch Maps?

  • They are designed specifically for children with complex needs
  • They recognise that every child learns in their own way and at their own pace
  • They help us plan personalised learning that is meaningful and motivating
  • They support the development of communication and independence
  • They ensure every success - however small - is valued and celebrated

Our goal is for every child at The Orchard to grow, belong, communicate and thrive at their own pace, in their own way.
